Location

Bell's Island is one of the La Have Islands and is located on Nova Scotia's South Shore in Lunenburg County between the towns of Liverpool and Bridgewater. On tourist maps the South Shore is referred to as the Lighthouse Route. The Fennel Old House is about a two and a quarter hour drive from Yarmouth and an hour and three quarter drive from the Halifax airport.

Traveling by Car and Ferry

The Cat, operated by Bay Ferries, sails from both Bar Harbor, Maine (Monday-Thursday) and Portland, Maine (Friday-Sunday) to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. This is a high-speed ferry that makes the Bar Harbor trip in about two and a half hours and the Portland trip in about five and a half.

The M.S. Scotia Prince used to sail from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. This service was discontinued in 2005, however, a new group is hoping to set up service from Boston, Massachusetts to Shelburne, Nova Scotia (1 hr closer to the Fennel Old House) in 2007.

Princess of Acadia, also operated by Bay Ferries, sails from Saint John, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia three times a day in-season. This is the cheapest of the ferries but requires the most driving (at least eight hours from Boston). The ferry trip lasts about two and three quarter hours. Because you arrive in Digby, instead of Yarmouth, the drive to the house is about a half and hour shorter.

Traveling by Car Only

Although many people think of Nova Scotia as an island, it is actually a peninsula extending from New Brunswick, which makes it possible to “drive around”. The trip takes about sixteen hours from Boston, not including stops.

Traveling by Plane

Several airlines fly to Halifax International Airport, which is an hour and forty-five minutes from our house. Most of the major car rental companies are located at the Halifax airport.
